(43-109) LIVE From Lake Pleasant, It's Saturday Night!!

Today’s post is being written as day light fades on Lake Pleasant. Here I sit in my camping chair, typing a word doc on my laptop, while Luis barbecues steak and grilled veggies, Jenny makes Guacamole at our table; Michelle M offers up Jell-o shots and other alcoholic beverages (although I'm not partaking:) and all of our kids play happily. What a FANTASTIC evening!!

The original SMF’s, Jenny, Michelle and I wanted to go camping, but we couldn’t fit it into our schedule; so we decided to make a day trip to Lake Pleasant. Michelle, Jenny and I went shopping for groceries last night; and even that was a TERRIFIC time. We all met at soccer at 710am this morning, since we had team pictures in addition to our 3 soccer games. Well, mine and Jenny' kids had 3 soccer games; and Michelle the trooper, went to Costco while we were at our third game, and purchased the steak and mushrooms that we needed for tonight's dinner; AND chunkeds up the vegetables that we were going to grill. Then by 315 we headed out to the lake.

Michelle and Jenny arrived before we did, and they told me that they had bought a day pass for $6 each, (2 for Jenny, because she had 2 vehicles;) and they said that I should check with the park ranger to see where we needed to go and what we needed to pay, in order to be able to stay into the evening, because they were under the impression that the $6 only entitled them to stay until 6pm. I told the park ranger that I had some questions, and he cheerfully told me that he had answers. Unfortunately, he had the wrong answers. He told me that we could stay until 10pm with the day pass and he pointed us towards the day pass areas. We met up our friends and headed off to the day pass areas. We chose a spectacular spot, overlooking the lake
with an abundance of tables under one awning; and we unpacked our cars. There was no fire pit as promised, but we noticed remnants of a fire and so we thought we’d be OK where we were; but Mike grew doubtful. I suggested that Mike look to see if he could find a sign stating that fires were prohibited and he didn’t but he was concerned about the signs that said the area closed at Sunset.

Mike called the park rangers and was told that in fact we could only stay where we were until sunset. They said that they would refund us on one of the day passes but that we’d need to buy an overnight pass. The overnight pass, was $17, and 2 cars were allowed for that price. Each additional car would be $6, so we’d owe a total of $29 and we’d already paid $24, but being the Queen of FAIRNESS, I didn’t think that we should have to pay anymore since we’d been given incorrect information, and spent most of our time packing up and moving around. Mike and I drove back to the park ranger, and I went up to the booth, sweet and friendly as can be. I told the park ranger (the same one that had “answered” my questions, that I was confused. I reminded him that he’d said we could stay until 10 with the day pass, but we were now being told that it was not so. I explained that we’d been moving around accordingly and asked if we could just trade the passes that we’d paid for and get an overnight pass instead; and he willingly agreed. OK, I’ll admit it; I was VERY satisfied with myself. And Michelle and I agreed that I missed my calling. Michelle said “No one can argue as good as you, when you’re right;” and I added “and even when I’m wrong.”

Mike and I scouted out a new location, staked our claim, rounded up everyone else; and finally settled in. There’s just something about being outdoors in the Arizona Autumn, that’s absolutely amazing. We have 7 children and 7 adults, and yet it's calm and quiet. Maybe the full day of soccer prior to getting to the lake, has tired everyone out and we are all in relaxation mode.

The sun has now set, and I’m typing in the dark; so I think I’m going to have to conclude. We’ve got dinner, Smores and a campfire ahead of us; and I need to help my friends. Today has been full of everything that I love; watching my kids play soccer, spending time outdoors and enjoying the company of our fabulous friends.

(43-108) The Bloomer Lady

If you've read "The Bumpy Ride"  before; then you probably know that I am a BIG fan (huge) of having garage sales, (mostly because I LOVE making money.)  Now I know that the typical response to that statement could be; "YAH, who doesn't?"  BUT the difference is; I LOVE making money AT garage sales.  I love making a deal, haggling and then feeling the cash in my palm when I'm done.  I enjoy making money at garage sales so much; that I even volunteer to help friends with their garage sales; even though the money that I'm earning, won't be mine.
A couple of months ago I assisted Michelle K with a garage sale; and as I was basking in the success of my sales; I recalled my Mom's friend, Rhoda, "The Bloomer lady."    My Mom had met Rhoda when I was in elementary school; and she was on a morning, bowling league.  Rhoda was "The bloomer lady;" and she would go to the bowling alley and sell underwear (bloomer's to old school New Yorker's) out of the trunk of her car.  Rhoda's husband had set her up with a little business; and she had certain underwear warehouses that she went to, and she had boxes of different size underwear that she would tote around in her car.  I'm sure that the bowling alley wasn't her only stop; but it was a great place for her to cultivate a clientele.  I remember being home one day after school, and my mom's friend, Lynn called to say that the bloomer lady was at her house, so if we needed anything, we should come over.  We went straight to Lynn's house, (is it any wonder that #9 on the "100 MORE Random Things About Me" list, is "I love to buy new underwear.")  And even though I couldn't have been more than ten at the time; to this day I remember getting a pair of bright orange underwear with suns and kites on it.  Yah, she had snazzy stuff like that...

As years went by, Rhoda expanded her business.  She no longer sold bloomers exclusively, but offered women's blouses and tops as well.  As a matter of fact; I remember that back in the 80's when sweatshirts with fringe were all the rage; my mom bought me several of them from Rhoda.  Now I'm sure that you're wondering how I went from writing about garage sales to the bloomer lady; but the answer is simple (if you understand "The Bumpy Ride," that is.)   I was thinking about Rhoda during the sale because I was admiring her entrepreneurial spirit.  She paid no rent to sell underwear from her trunk; or from people's houses; and ultimately, she created a lucrative business for herself.  So I started thinking; "HMMM; maybe I want to be the bloomer lady."  I put that thought aside; since we all know that I want to be the writer lady; but today I was talking to Christina (the lady that cuts our hair;) and I asked her if she'd gotten anymore purses; because a few months ago she had tried selling some.  Christina explained that she sold what she had, but that she wasn't going to do it again, because people didn't seem to have money to buy luxuries right now; and sadly, a purse can be a luxury.  I cheerfully, said "then maybe you should sell underwear."  And once again I thought of Rhoda.  I told Christina the story of Rhoda, "The bloomer lady;" and I mentioned that I'd considered blogging about her before; and since this is the second time in a short while that I've thought about her; I figured that today would be the perfect day.

It's so funny how you can go years and years without thinking of a person or a situation; and then all of a sudden they or it is at the forefront of your mind.  Who knows, maybe one day I will be the new, bloomer lady; but for now, It's just my pleasure to write about her.

(43-107) Just What I Needed...

It's absolutely, astonishing; how in a matter of hours your life can change.  This morning my friend Jenifer and I went to Joanne's and Hobby Lobby to look for materials to make a banner for the Torpedo's.   Jen and I are still getting to know each other; and so we were talking about our families.  I explained that I have one brother, but we don't speak to each other; and I have an Aunt who lives about 20 minutes away from me; but we aren't very close.  I told Jen that I wished that I had more family; and she told me about hers.

I think I've mentioned before that Richie Howell was an only child; but my mom wasn't.  My mom was the youngest of four.  Her oldest brother, Harold; lived in California with his wife Maxine and their daughters Michelle and Jackie.  Her brother Bubby (yes, Bubby;)his wife Marsha and their sons, Steven and Mitchell; lived n Spring Valley, about 20 minutes from where I grew up, and her sister Fran, her husband Harvey and their sons, Jeff and Burt; moved to Maryland when I was 6.   I remember visiting our California family when I was three; but we never went back; nor did they come to New York.  During different periods of my childhood; we were estranged from all of my mom's siblings and their families; so I never really knew any of my cousins while I was growing up.

After both of my parents had passed away; I barely heard from "my family;" but somehow, which oddly enough I can't remember; I got in touch with my cousin Jackie; who was married and living in Massachusetts.  It was Spring break 1988 and it just so happened that I was going to be in Massachusetts for a couple of days; and we arranged to get together.  Even though I didn't know Jackie at all; it felt very nice to be connected to someone in my family.  We kept in touch for awhile; but then somehow ( which again, I don't remember;) we lost touch.

Now every once and a while, I would check Facebook to see if Steven and Mitchell were there; and tonight, in a VERY roundabout way, I found my cousin Jackie.  I sent her a brief message; and within a few minutes, she had emailed me and told me how happy she was to hear from me.  Within 2 emails we were Facebook friends and immediately started IM'ing.  We chatted for at least 2 hours; and we were both ecstatic.  It turns out that Jackie, her husband and her younger daughter (who's 21) live in California; and her older daughter; who's 25, lives right here in AZ; in Chandler.

I wasn't sure what I was going to blog about tonight, and I got on Facebook thinking that I might find something to write about; and boy did I!  The nicest thing is; that what I found to write about, is ever so much more important than this one post. I wound up finding JUST WHAT I NEEDED!!  Jackie told me that I made her day and her night and I told her that this made me very happy because I had always wanted a cousin; to which she wrote "you now have 4," - (her, her 2 daughters and her husband.)
What a difference a few hours can make indeed.
