(43-186) Good Sports

I sat at dinner tonight and discussed possible blog topics with Luis, Jenny and (SMF) David; as I REALLY didn't want to write about what happened at the tournament today.  But I just re-read yesterday's post, "I Had A Feelin;"  and it seems to me, that I would be remiss if I didn't tell you what the outcome of the tournament was; so here we go...

I woke our household up at 650am because we needed to be on the soccer field by 815.  As Luis and I got everyone ready, we discussed the drama from the night before; and we knew that we were in for yet another unpredictable day.  Luis and the Torpedos played their first game at 9 and they lost 5 to 1; but everyone played really well.  Kelsie's goalie kicks were the best they'd been all season; and the team played as well as possible considering they were missing their highest scoring forward, who was at the doctor with  a fever and an earache.

We had a break for an hour, so Luis, Jenny, (SMF) David and I, took the kids to McDonald's, so we could have some coffee and the kids could play.  We discussed the previous night's events, and agreed that we all just wanted to enjoy the tournament today.

We were back on the field by 11:15 for Lyndzi's game.  After missing last weeks game, because she was sick; and missing a week and a half of practice, my girl played goalie for the first half; and made a brilliant save.  She played as well as ever, and her team won four to zero.

As soon as Lyndzi's game was over, we went on to Nicky's.  Nicky's team played unbelievably well, and won the final game of their tournament seven to zero. Nicky's coach presented the medals and trophies to the team; and when he'd finished; he told Nicky that he had chosen him as one of five players to play in next weeks All-Star game.  We were / are SO delighted for Nicky!!!

With three games down and two to go; both Lyndzi and Kelsie had a game at 3:00.  Kelsie was doing a great job as goalie, until she announced to me that she HAD to go to the bathroom.  I told Luis; and he subbed her out so that she could use the restroom.  Ultimately, the Torpedos tied 1 to 1; and finished their tournament in third place.  I am so PROUD, of Luis and Kelsie.  Luis did such a great job for his first venture as a coach and Kelsie came SO far this season.

Trying to watch two games concurrently was not easy; but we sat in between the two fields so that we could keep an eye on both.  Lyndzi's team won five to zero, so they too came in first place for the tournament.   Lyndzi's coach gave out their medals and said something about each of the players.  He spoke about what a great goalie Lyndzi had become and how he looked forward to teaching her how to dive for the ball next season.

We hugged our friends, packed up our gear and concluded another GREAT soccer season.  We learned a lot about soccer and about people; and we left feeling confident that our children had all improved their soccer skills this season; had a great time playing; and behaved as all around good sports.

(43-185) I Had A Feelin...

OY!  I would like nothing more than to let that one word suffice, to sum up my evening; and I know that you'd get the point.  However, I would be disappointing myself if I phoned it in like that; so I'll tell you more.

For the past few days I've been concerned about our end of season soccer tournament; for although it should be great fun for the kids; there's a lot going on with the soccer board; and complaints from parents; which are making this experience stressful and unpleasant.  Nonetheless, I tried to remain positive and look forward to this evening; but this morning I had a feelin that I just couldn't shake and I knew that something was going to go wrong.

I met Mari for a quick cup of coffee and as soon as she saw me, she asked me if I was OK.  I told her that I was absorbed in some soccer drama; and that I just wanted to shake it off and move past it.  We had a lovely visit, and I went on my way; but there was that feeling again.

Fast forward to this evening.  The Torpedos warmed up and checked in with the Field Marshall, but the other team only had three players there.  They had missed the deadline to check in and it was getting very close to game time; so I walked over to talk to the coach and he explained that he had a small team to begin with; and now he had three kids out sick, so he was going to have to forfeit.  I told him that we'd be happy to play him anyway, and that we could either play with the same amount of kids that he had OR we could give him some players.  He preferred the latter option; so we walked over to the Field Marshall and explained the situation; and then we went to tell Luis what was going on.  We asked our team for volunteers to go on the other teams side; and almost all of our players did; INCLUDING Kelsie.  I told Kelsie that she needed to stay with Luis; but we gave them 4 of our players and then I updated our parents on the situation.  The kids all seemed to have a great time; and that's what it's all about; so I know we did the right thing.

Feeling pretty good about the tournament thus far; we moved over to the field where Nicky was going to be playing.  Little United took an early lead of two to zero, and the other team put up a good fight; but by the second half of the game, I found myself in a fight as well; because a couple of people were standing behind us, bad mouthing our coaches and our team.  They were saying that because we were winning six to zero, we needed to stop scoring and give the other team a chance to score.  Really?  Because I thought that you were supposed to get what you worked for; and if they wanted to score, they needed to get the ball etc. etc. In my life, I have never seen such poor losers; or such bad sports; and those were the parents.  It made me nauseous.  They were saying that our coaches / team were very disrespectful for playing as we did; and I was just baffled.  WHY should our team have to be anything less than what they are - a great team!  Is that how the world works?  Someone is good at something but they shouldn't try as hard as they can; because someone who's not as good, can't do as much; and you don't want them to feel bad?  I thought that the idea of the soccer league was to have fun, and to improve your skills; and that's exactly what the kids on Nicky's team have done. Now if it wasn't bad enough that I got into an argument; Luis got involved, as did Jenny and my friend, Tina.  It was just ridiculous.  Arguing with these people was pointless, and disturbing and it kept me from watching and enjoying the game.

I wish that I had NOT had this feelin.  And truth be told, the drama that occurred was not the drama that I'd been expecting.  I thought if there was drama, it would be over something else; but I was wrong.  Luis and I are both very upset about what happened tonight and about the messages that these people are sending.  We're not really sure how we want to address this situation, or what we're going to do with the information that we now have.  All we wanted was for our kids to play soccer and have a good time; but some adults; (who should be ashamed of themselves,) are interfering with this.

Tonight was very unfortunate and extremely unpleasant and I'm almost afraid to see what tomorrow will bring.  I know that (for me,) I've been somewhat vague; but trust me, the most important part of this story is that 1.  Children learn what they see; both negative and positive; and parents need to be very careful about the example that they're setting for their children.   2.  You get what you work for.  No one is going to hand something to you. and  3.  The harder you work; the more you should receive.

Please send positive energy our way.
Till next time,

(43-172) Little United

Today I witnessed the most incredible soccer game EVER!!  And for those of you who regularly read "The Bumpy Ride," you might be asking yourself, how many different kinds of soccer stories can she write;  but trust me when I tell you, that this one is worth the read.

I'm starting to find trends in our game days at soccer.  For instance, last week Lyndzi had the first game of the day and her team seemed a little off.  Then we went to Nicky's game, and although they won; his team seemed off as well.  Fast forward to today, and we were on the field by 7:20 to set up our goal and warm up for Kelsie's 8am game.  By 8 the opposing team only had four players, and their coach was no where to be found.  Some of our dads were kind enough to set up the goal for the other team, but by a few minutes after 8, it seemed unlikely that our game would take place.  The ref told me that the team had until 10 minutes after 8, to get a minimum of four players and a goalie on the field, or they'd have to forfeit.  One of the moms from their team stepped up to try and coach the four kids; and although Luis could have played seven kids, like a regular game; he did the right thing and played four as well.

By 820 or so, the other coach showed up with his son; so we were able to play 5 on 5, and the Torpedos won 8 to 1.

Both Nicky and Lyndzi were supposed to have 930 games, so I asked Luis if he wanted to go to Lyndzi's game first, and I'd go to Nicky's; because I had a feeling that if Luis went to Nicky's game first; come half time, Luis wouldn't want to leave Nicky's game.  Now here's the symmetry part... Nicky's team only had five players today; and the other team had 14. This has never happened before.  Nicky's team had to forfeit because they needed to have a minimum of seven players in order to "technically" have a game.  Nicky's coaches decided to play the game anyway, and told the opposing coach that he could play as many players as he liked; instead of just playing five, like us.  The other coach took them up on their offer, and played 11 players on the field, against our five.

I was sitting with (SMF) David, and our mouths just dropped.  Neither of us could believe that the opposing team was going to play so many players; and yet they did.  Within the first couple of minutes, the opposing team scored; and very shortly thereafter; so did Nicky.  And after Nicky scored; so did our goalie.  That's right, I said SO DID OUR GOALIE.  Our goalie got a hold of the ball, and ran the field and scored; not once, but three times by half time.

The coach of the opposing team was going wild.  He loudly advised his players that there were two of them to cover each one of our players; but you never would have known it.  David and I kept remarking how absolutely, unbelievable this game was; and I said "I can't leave at half time;" even though I knew that I had to.

When Luis arrived at half time, I apprised him of the situation and let him know that we were winning 4-1.  I went off to Lyndzi's game, which her team won; and then rushed back to Nicky's.

There were a few minutes left in the game when I arrived, and the score was 5 to 3; with Little United still winning.  Luis told me that Nicky had scored two more goals, but one didn't count because he had been off sides.  Little United was exhausted, but they battled on; and when the whistle blew, they had won the game that they had to forfeit.

Oh my God, oh my God, OH MY GOD!  This was absolutely one of the best things that I had ever seen in my life; and I'm not just talking soccer.  I have so enjoyed watching Little United play all season long.  They are truly poetry in motion.  The coaches are the most knowledgeable, and skilled that I have ever encountered and I know that Luis is not insulted by that statement.  Nicky has made so much progress as a player with this team, and their drive and spirit are just spectacular.

We only have one game left before heading to our end of season tournament, and I for one am going to miss watching Little United in action.
Till next time...

(43-130) Tis The Season...

When I wrote "Welcoming the Season," I told you that we were going to the Red Rock Light Fantasy in Sedona; and then when I posted "Yes Wii Can," I explained that we chose to postpone our excursion, since my friend Jen had gotten a migraine.  Well today's the day and we're really looking forward to heading up north.

We started our very, chilly morning on the soccer field at 730am.  Nicky had a terrific game, scoring 2 goals and even playing goalie for a while.  I was very impressed with how he played.  It's such a wonderful privilege to watch his confidence grow.
Kelsie had forgotten her cleats, so in between Nicky and Lyndzi's games; Kels and I drove back to the house to get them.  Lyndzi's game was already in progress with a tie score, by the time we returned.  Lyndzi played goalie for the second half; and she definitely meant business.  At one point a ball was heading straight for her face, but she managed to block both her gorgeous face and the goal at the same time.  The game ended with T-N-T winning 7 to 2.
We moved on to Kelsie's game; and sadly, our opponents took an early lead and we never recovered.  I was nervous for Kelsie who played goalie during the second half; but I think she did a very admirable job.  The Torpedos experienced their first lost; but I have to say that they were great sports about it.
I thought that the U8 games were over for the day and I asked some of the dads to help Luis take the goal down.  A number of the dads pitched in; but just as we were about to walk away; some people from another team showed up and advised us that they had a 1230 game.  My BAD!  I can't be right all of the time and clearly I was mistaken.  Luis and I dragged the goal back out  and set it up again; and in no time at all we were on our way.

We're happily getting ready to take our holiday photo and look at the beautiful, light displays.  AND; tis the season; I'd like to share some more of my favorite holiday music.   No matter what your holiday is; I hope these bring you a smile:

(43-128) A Little Scare

The past few days have been particularly cold for Phoenix; so on Tuesday night we nearly froze our butts off at soccer practice. OK, my Northeast friends and readers from colder regions; I can hear your grumblings now; and I can assure you that I know what COLD is; AND I know that no matter how cold it is in Phoenix, it's nothing compared to what you guys go through.  HOWEVER, you must consider that when we're used to 120 degree weather and the temperature drops in half; OR LOWER; that IS cold for us.  Just like you're used to having your summers in the 80's, but when the temperature drops to the 40's, you've got your winter gear on; right??

ANYWAY, Tuesday night I was curled up in my sweatshirt as far as I could get and I was dreading the thought of being on the soccer field by 730 Saturday morning; but then tonight, it was gorgeous.  It was chilly but not windy; and sitting at the field while Lyndzi practiced was not nearly as difficult as it was the other night.  I was having a great time chatting away with my friends; when all of a sudden we all heard a loud SMACK!  It was the sound of a soccer ball hitting Lyndzi right in the face.  I held my breath for a second and everything seemed to be moving in slow motion; and then Lyndzi let out a cry; and I went running.  YES, I said running!  I don't think my girlfriends had ever seen me move so fast, but when you think that your child is hurt, your adrenaline kicks in and nothing can stop you from getting to them as quickly as possible; even if you're Wii thinks that you're an obese 65 year old in a 43 year old body.  As I was running to her, Lyndzi immediately turned toward me and started moving in my direction.  I had feared that the ball had hit her nose; but in all actuality it was her cheek.  The ball had been VERY cold and the boy that had kicked it, had an extremely powerful foot; but Lyndzi was fine.  I'm sure that it stung quite a bit, given the cold and the impact; but I think she just had a little scare more than an injury.  I held her and assured her that she was fine and that everything was going to be OK.  The coach and another dad came over to make sure that she was alright and check her out; and then once again my tough little girl got right back out there and continued playing goalie for the rest of the drill.  When the going gets tough, Lyndzi gets going and she always does so with a smile on her face.

Once again I am so proud of Lyndzi's never say die attitude; her resilience and her dedication.  I think that in fact we BOTH had a little scare; and I am so thankful that Lyndzi wasn't injured tonight.  She just never ceases to amaze me; and I am in absolute awe of her.

(43-116) My Girl's Got COURAGE

We've been having a sensational soccer season.  At the risk of jinxing us; I'll tell you that all three of my kid's teams are undefeated thus far.  Lyndzi and Kelsie have each had one tie in addition to their victories; and Nicky's team has won every game.  Although all three kids have very different skill levels, each of the games have been nothing short of fantastic.

Today Lyndzi's coach wasn't at the game, because he went backpacking; so a couple of Dad's filled in coaching The T-N-T for him.  The coach had provided the Dad's with a lineup; that included Lyndzi playing forward or defender in the first half; and goalie (her preferred position,) in the second half.  We were playing a team that we've beaten before; but two seasons ago, this team was the team to beat; and our kids remember that.

The first half was a little tougher for us than usual, and by the time half time arrived we were losing one to two.  Lyndzi told me that she was a little nervous to play goalie, since the other team was playing so hard; and they were losing for the first time this season.   Lyndzi felt that if they lost, it would be her fault; so she wasn't sure that she wanted to take that chance.  The Dad's called the team together for a pep talk.  They asked Lyndzi if she was ready to be goalie; and I heard her tell them that she was a little nervous.  I "thought" that they were looking for a replacement; but the next thing I knew, my girl was putting her goalie jersey on.  I went over to the meeting and gave Lyndzi a BIG hug, and told her how very proud of her I was, for being afraid and trying anyway.

As she took to the field, the Dad's were talking her up, telling her what a great goalie she was; and that she had nothing to fear.  They said that as long as she had a good time playing, everything would be OK.

T-N-T was back in true form by the second half and they scored early, scored again, and again and again.  The opposing team scored one goal on Lyndzi and one goal only; although they attempted four.  The game ended with T-N-T winning five to three.

EVERYONE was so proud of Lyndzi and told her what a terrific job she did; and just as we were about to walk away, one of the Dad's said "Lyndzi, how many goals did they score on you?"  And Lyndzi quietly said "one."  He then repeated his question, and with a bit more confidence and a big smile; Lyndzi answered "ONE."  He then went on to tell Lyndzi; "They scored one; and you were right where you were supposed to be.  You went for it, and it slipped; but it was a lucky goal; not one that had anything to do with your error."  He then said, "Lyndzi, win or lose; as long as you give it your all and have fun, that's all that any of us care about."  He told her that she did a great job; and I thanked him very much for talking to her.

John Wayne said " Courage is being scared to death - but saddling up anyway;" and today Lyndzi did just that.  I think that she was very brave to face her fear; and I'm so glad that she was successful despite it.

You all know that my kids make me proud on a daily basis; but today is different.  Today I am proud FOR Lyndzi because she made her own difficult decision and showed everyone her strength of character and ability. ANYONE can agree to play goalie when they have a big lead or are playing a weaker team; but to know that you might lose and give it your all anyway; now THAT is courageous.

(43-81) Opening Day

We began our opening day of soccer season at 6am; and were on the soccer field by 7.  We got the field set up, and our team arrived by 730.  It seemed that the opposing team was going to have to forfeit because they only had 3 players; but the referee agreed to wait an additional 10 minutes.  The ref also agreed that if the team had to forfeit, we could lend them a few players and at least have a scrimmage.  By the end of the ten minutes; 2 more players arrived; so we agreed to play just 5 on 5 instead of the usual 7 on 7.

The Torpedos looked terrific in their Turquoise jerseys; and within the first couple of minutes; they'd scored 3 goals; and a win seemed well within reach.  Kelsie amazed me, when she took to the field.  She really came to play.  What a difference from the player that she was last year.  The families were all fired up; and cheered enthusiastically.  And then, just as I expected; someone yelled "Go Tornados;" and thankfully, it WASN'T me.  I politely corrected him; and we all encouraged the Torpedos; who, by half time, were winning 7 to 0.

We had a team of 10 today, so playing 5 on 5 allowed us 5 substitutes, while the other team had none. Luis felt that there was no need to have a shutout; when the kids were supposed to be there to have a good time; so he decided to put some of his newer, less skilled, players in defender positions; so that the other team would have an opportunity to score.  Is it any wonder that I love this man?

The Fireballs scored 3 goals; and the game concluded with The Torpedos winning 9-3.  I commented to my friend, Jenny; that "winning feels so much better than losing;" but honestly, I didn't mean that in a rude way; I was speaking from experience.  Sara, (another Torpedos mom;) heard me, laughed; and asked if that was going to be the title of tonight's blog.  Sara then told me that last night's title "
Sometimes Size DOES Matter;" really made her chuckle.  With that I pulled out my bag of gargantuan, grapes from my cooler.  I told her that I didn't think that my pictures had done the grapes justice and after laying her eyes on them, Sara fully agreed.  I think it was Sara's husband, Tim; who suggested that I should have taken a picture of one of the grapes next to a quarter.  I thought that was an incredible, idea and I was very disappointed that I hadn't thought of it last night.
All that viewed the grapes, were shocked by their size; and after tasting them, everyone agreed that they were the sweetest grapes that they'd ever tasted.  When we got home, I asked Luis to take a picture of one of the grapes and a quarter; but he wouldn't.  His exhaustion won out over his desire to cater to my obsession and so I had to settle for just mentioning the grapes again, in order to convey their actual size.

OK, enough about the grapes.  After the Torpedos victory, we went to watch Lyndzi and her team, TNT.  Lyndzi played goalie for the first half.  She had one perfect play and another that wasn't quite as successful, but both times; she gave it her all.

By the start of the second half, my friend Tina had joined us; TNT was winning and Lyndzi played forward.  Now Lyndzi is not a runner and Luis often comments that Lyndzi has been walking since she was 10 months old, but she still hasn't grasped the concept of running.  Just the other day during practice, one of the mom's had told me that she thought Lyndzi was a very good goalie; and I thanked her and said that it was a good position for her, because she didn't really know how to run.  I likened her lack of running ability to what it might look like if the Snuffaluffagus was running; so imagine our surprise as we watched Lyndzi dribble the ball down the field all by herself.  No one tried to intercept her at all; until she neared the goal.  We had been sitting on the edge of our seats watching the complete, control that Lyndzi had over the ball and felt so bad for her as she was stopped short, before getting the opportunity to shoot for the goal.  Lyndzi was clearly disappointed and in the cheeriest of voices; we heard our Little Mary Sunshine, shout "Darn it!  I think that she was probably just frustrated with herself; but our sweet girl, took it all in stride.  TNT won anyway; and we were able to take a lunch break until noon; when Nicky's team would warm up.

At 1230, Nicky and his team, Little United; were ready to play their game, and they took a very early lead.  This is a new team for Nicky and he's been really trying to prove himself.  He worked hard, and did all that was asked of him; so in the last ten minutes of the game, the coach subbed him in as a goalie.  I was nervous about Nicky giving goalie a try because he hadn't attempted it in 4 years.  I think I was holding my breath, as I waited for the other team to take a shot at the goal; but Nicky rose to the occasion, dove for the ball as it was called for; and kicked the ball out out of the goal in an admirable way.

Little United played so well today, that I lost track of how many goals they'd scored.  Their win was our third of the day; and our whole family was very satisfied; but worn out.
We drove home and the kids dragged themselves out of our minivan, with barely enough energy to take a shower.

I immediately, took my extremely, sunburned self into the shower; because I had to get ready to go to scrapbooking.  I packed up a minimal amount of stuff; and my laptop, since I was going to have to write my blog at the crop; and that's exactly what I've been doing for the past 5 hours.  Yes, I said 5 hours.  Which I think proves 2 things.  1.  That I am truly dedicated to this pursuit AND 2.  That I absolutely, cannot blog efficiently with a lot of people around.  OK, In my defense of the 5 hour timeframe, I'll concede that  I've taken a dinner break, and actually went with Mari and our friend Brooke, to pick up dinner; AND I've been distracted by conversation; and other things that I'll tell you about tomorrow; but nonetheless, 5 hours have elapsed since I started this blog and for better or worse; I REALLY need to conclude. So, barring anything unforeseen, or ridiculous occuring on Sunday; you can expect me to fill you in on this fantastic crop then.

(43-64) Take 2...

I wouldn't dare say that I was the Queen of IRONY; however, I do enjoy it very much, and tonight I've been served a healthy dose.  Earlier this week, I wrote "So HAPPY To Be Wrong;" and I explained that as I am the Queen of MISHAPS, I frequently make mistakes; but I don't have a problem admitting when I'm wrong.  And then JUST the next day, I go and prove my own point by writing "Name That Team;" and quoting the name that Kelsie recommended (for her soccer team;) as the Tornadoes, but it turns out that it WASN'T the Tornadoes at all.

What can I say?  You say Torpedos, I say Tornadoes.  And, it actually was The Torpedos that Kelsie suggested; which I like that even more; despite the fact that I couldn't remember it. In my defense (because of course, I always have one;) I think that I was so deliriously tired when I wrote the post that I fixated on the wrong name. Word to the wise, for (say it with me;) "The Greater Good;"  DON'T sleep and blog.  I believe that I had caught myself dozing off as I was typing the email address where you may send your suggestions; and as soon as I woke myself up; I concluded the blog and edited, edited, edited. I read Tornadoes over and over but it never dawned on me that I was writing the wrong name; until tonight.

As the soccer season draws closer day by day; we're running out of time to name the team; so our conversations have been predominantly about soccer; ESPECIALLY the name of Kelsie's team; and Luis had even commented "Who would have thought that it would have been so hard to name a soccer team?"
Tonight we ran the gamut from calling them Circle K, to The Thingamajigs, to The Simpsons, The Osbournes, The Cure, The Whatchamacallits, The Dolphins, The Asteroids, The Meteorites and the Electric Eels; just to name a few. When all was said and done Luis and Kelsie agreed, beyond a shadow of a doubt that their team would be The Torpedos and no tornado will be able to stop them.  It's now time to go out and kick some grass.

(43-63) Name That Team...

The soccer season is rapidly approaching and I for one am giddy with excitement.  Although soccer season is extremely taxing on our schedule, I enjoy everything about it; and this year there will be even more to love as Luis has agreed to coach Kelsie's team.
Luis was an assistant coach for Lyndzi and Kelsie's team last year and he was Nicky's assistant coach for the past 2 years; but now he's agreed to take center stage and coach his own team; and I think that he's going to be fantastic.
We already know 3 of the girls and 1 of the boys that's going to be on the team; and I'm sure that they're going to have a sensational, season; if only Luis can decide on a name for his team.  I must admit, the team name has already brought us hours of entertainment.  When I was helping my friend, Jenny with her garage sale on Friday and Saturday, we discussed possible names all morning.  I know that I haven't mentioned this particular garage sale since it occurred; but I will tell you that the highlight was when one of the men who stopped by the sale, asked me if I'd like to go rabbit hunting with him.  ME, rabbit hunting??  Need I say more?  I politely declined his invitation but couldn't resist the opportunity to throw him for a loop, when he asked if David (Jenny's husband;) was Jenny's husband or mine; and I replied "both!"  Don't ask me why; it was just one of those kinds of days, but BOY was it a good laugh!

Heading around the turn now.  So names, names, my kingdom for a name.  We've looked at names of Mexican soccer teams, worldwide soccer teams, and popular team names.  I myself was partial to SWAT (Soccer with Attitude;) but I thought it would sound strange for Luis to call a player's home and say "Hi, this is Coach Luis with The Swat."  See, it just doesn't sound right.  Nor does "Go SWAT."
We mulled over, The Diablos, The Heat, The Hurricanes (but with Luis' accent he has to work a little too hard to say that one, so we decided to pass it over.)  Kelsie suggested the Hammers, which we all thought was cute; but I think I had the best name of all when I suggested "The Situation."  Tina's daughter Kristin, proposed that we could all do a fist pump when someone scored a goal; and I thought this was just fabulous; but alas as much fun as it is to joke about; I don't think we should really be "The Situation."  Now K-Woww; maybe...

The name search continued and Kelsie came up with "The Tornadoes;" which I actually like and Luis is considering.  I think Luis has narrowed it down between The Tornadoes and The Dragons.  Or maybe we could be the Dragon Tornadoes.  Nonetheless, no matter what their name is going to be; I KNOW Luis is going to do a phenomenal  job.  You couldn't ask for a more slendiferous coach; and the kids are going to have an amazing time;  BUT, if you do have a suggestion for our team name, I welcome you to leave a comment or email AsktheQOE@ gmail.com with your suggestions.

When I sat down to write tonight's post, I noticed that I'd already done 199; which makes this my Bicentennial.  "The Bumpy Ride" began on March 4, 2007 when I wrote "The Queen of EVERYTHING and the Bumpy Ride (or Vice Versa);" and I cannot believe that tonight's post is my 200th.   I'd like to think that I've remained true to my original mission.  I re-read my first post and I don't think that I've strayed very far at all.  Surely the fact that I've been writing my blog, every day for the past 63 days, has something to do with the expeditiously, increasing number of posts; but regardless; 200 is 200 and as quick as I am to put myself down, I will be equally swift to talk myself up.  I am VERY proud of myself; my commitment , and my pursuit of my dream.  I thank each and everyone of you who take the time to read "The Bumpy Ride."  I thank you for your patience and your understanding and your dedication.
Till next time...

(43-39) It PAYS To Play with USA!

This will be the fifth year that Nicky and Lyndzi will play soccer with  the USA soccer league and the fourth year for Kelsie.  We've tried playing other sports with other local leagues and I have to say that NONE of the other leagues that WE'VE tried compare.
As I was / am so impressed with USA soccer; I joined the board 3 years ago, because they were / are looking for volunteers.  It's very sad to say that in the 5 years that we've been with USA our enrollment has been on a steady decline; but I attribute this to the economy and the fact that USA ONLY does soccer whereas these other leagues offer other sports.  HOWEVER, with USA soccer, you definitely get the most bang for your buck. USA's soccer season is longer than any of its local competitors.  Our registration fee is only $80 for your first child and $75 for your additional children; and includes, a jersey, shorts, socks and a trophy.  All you'll only need to supply is shin guards, cleats and a ball.  We have extremely dedicated coaches and all levels of players; and we WELCOME new players NO MATTER which age division they'll be joining.

In our quest to recruit new players we have decided to offer a $10 referral refund to a player who refers a new player.  You can EVEN be a new player yourself; and refer someone to sign up along with you, and we'll refund you $10!!  But wait; there's more... There is NO LIMIT to how many people you can refer; so for someone like me who loves a challenge AND and saving money; if I can recruit 8 new players, Nicky would play for free and YOU you can do the same!!  Now don't get me wrong; the purpose of this blog is not for my own personal gain; but to help increase our participation. I don't want my kids to have to play somewhere else because USA didn't have enough players; but unfortunately, that could become a reality.

I maintain that you have to stand up for what you believe in and do all that you can to contribute to things that are important to you.  My kids aren't the next David Beckam or Mia Hamm but they LOVE playing soccer and they truly like all of the coaches, kids and parents associated with USA.  Having played with other leagues, I can honestly say that USA soccer seems to attract THE NICEST people and we have made some really fabulous friends there; and we don't want to see it come to an end.

So with all of this being said; if you or anyone you know has a child who's interested in playing recreational soccer in the Phoenix area, please check out USA Soccer.  You can register online, or in person at Pioneer elementary (registration times and location are listed on the website.)
If you have referred a friend please email our Director, Mike Felix with  the name and division of your player and the name and division of the player that you referred.  You can also let him know that you heard about the discount on "The Bumpy Ride."  Once the new player's registration has been completed, Mike will process your refund.

Now for those of you who may be disappointed in this "Bumpy Ride," please keep in mind that first and foremost, I'm a mom and there is nothing more important to me than my kids.  So even if soccer is a snooze to you, or you don't have kids or your not in the Phoenix area; just think of this as a post by a mom who is trying desperately to help make her kids soccer league the best it can be.  I'm someone who doesn't just complain about a problem I try to fix it because (say it with me) "It's all about the GREATER GOOD!"

SCORE!

I have been waiting for this day for weeks.... Opening day of soccer season for USA Soccer. I'm happy to say that I'm getting a reprieve this year in as much as my 3 kids will be playing on only 2 teams since Kelsie is playing up a year. Kelsie should be playing with 5 & 6 year olds; but since she started early (at age 3) everyone thought that she would be just fine to play with Lyndzi and the 6 & 7 year olds, so both of my girls are able to play together on The Shockers. WOOHOO!! Nicky will also be playing with The Shockers; but the 10 & 11 year old team and Luis is an assistant coach for both.

We started practicing just a couple of weeks ago and though all 3 kids were ready to start playing again it seems that Nicky has decided that this is the year for him to become a soccer player. Soccer seems to be making more sense to him lately and he is playing more purposefully which is so beautiful to see considering that he is not naturally an athletic kid. Nicky is an academic overachiever and he isn't used to be second best, but thus far at soccer he has not been a reliable, outstanding player and he is determined to change that NOW. Nicky has been plagued by an event that took place 2 years ago when he scored his first goal in a game but as luck would have it; after play resumed, the ref blew the whistle and announced that the goal hadn't counted and Nicky was devastated. All of the parents and his teamates assured him that it was an excellant goal and even though they weren't counting it, he still SCORED A GOAL; but he just didn't buy it and has been trying to vindicate himself ever since. So yesterday after practice, Nicky told me that he had been scoring many goals; that he knew that he needed to kick the ball to the side of the goal in order to score AND that he felt like he was going to score a goal on Saturday. He then said "What would happen if I scored a goal tomorrow?" And I replied "I would party like it's 1999." Which only served to date myself and confuse Nicky; but I thought it was hysterical.
Luis and I gave all 3 kids the usual pre- game pep talk. "We want you to play hard and give it your all; but most importantly HAVE FUN. It doesn't matter if you score a goal, (although it would be great if you did;) just try your hardest. And then we were ready to go.
We started our soccer day on the field at 730am. Nicky had the first of his double header at 8 and his team won 6-4. There was a noticeable difference in how Nicky was playing; so much so that one of the mom's commented; "Nicky seems to be playing with more confidence, he's more aggressive." And another said "I don't think it's going to be long before Nicky scores a goal," To which I replied "From your mouth to God's ears." Not because it's so important to me; but because it's important to him. We praised Nicky during half time, moms, coaches and players alike. Everyone told Nicky what a great job they thought he was doing and I think that really helped him. The game ended and we went on to watch a couple of friend's games before the girls warmed up at 1030.
Coach Russell decided to let Lyndzi try her hand at playing goalie and so in the hundred degree weather, Lyndzi put on the long sleeve goalie jersey on top of her uniform AND the soccer gloves, and she was raring to go. Lyndzi did a respectable job considering she hadn't had any practice as goalie and no one was really playing defender but for the second half she played forward and really played well. Lyndzi has scored goals in the past but today she scored an AWESOME goal and we all went wild. Now, what can I say about Kelsie? Kelsie is a natural fighter; so of course she played HARD. She held her own and then some and I couldn't have been more proud of my 5 year old running up and down that field, kicking with such determination and never giving up. Kelsie made a goal attempt and wasn't successful BUT I have no doubt that she will be scoring in the near future. The "Little" Shockers did far better than we had anticipated and it seems like they have a lot of potential; even though they lost.
Win or lose, I never tire of watching my kids play; which is a good thing since we had to head back over for Nicky's 2nd game of the day. We were joined by my friends Jackie, Tina and Kristin which just made our day even more special. I am so grateful to have friends who would sacrifice THEIR free time to come out to the soccer fields on such a hot day and watch MY KIDS play. And I am SO glad that they were there to witness Nicky in his glory. The game had only just begun and Nicky had a REALLY good kick. I was impressed by how hard he had kicked the ball and never in a million years would I have guessed that this kick would score a goal BUT IT DID! I felt like I had been watching the kick in slow motion; like Steve Martin in "Parenthood" when he is waiting to see if his son Kevin was going to catch the baseball. And although I didn't get on my knees and dance across the field, like Steve did; I screamed and clapped so hard that my hands hurt. Jackie said that she had NEVER seen me so excited and I coudn't agree more. I was SO overjoyed for Nicky and his accomplishment; that it was truly one of the best moments of my life. The moms were cheering, the coaches were astounded, and his teamates congratulated him; but MOST importantly, Nicky was satisfied. He was proud, he was confident, he was victorious. What a moment! What a day! Life is good!

I Think I'm Someone's Newman

I am the Queen of OVER COMMITTING MYSELF. The Queen of CRAMMING AS MANY ACTIVITIES INTO ONE DAY AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE, The Queen of GETTING INVOLVED, The Queen of GO-GO-GO -
OK, The Queen of EVERYTHING.

When I registered Nicky and Lyndzi for the swim team last summer; you had to agree to volunteer at one meet per season (per child;) so I was prepared to help by giving out ribbons, or being a timer; or whatever they needed. But, then it happened... Shannon (The Head coach,) who also happened to have been Nicky's second grade teacher AND a friend of mine; put up a sign that she needed a volunteer to announce the home meets. "Volunteer" ughh; that's my kryptonite. I have such a hard time ignoring a call for help - let alone from a friend. So, you all know what I did. That's right; " I volunteered." But, I did tell Shannon that I'd do it "if" she couldn't find someone else. And guess what - she found someone else; BUT she still needed me. Oh yes; she had a VERY special (and by special I mean nerve racking) job for me. I was going to be an officiant. I was going to sit at the table with the announcer and determine which order the kids placed in and record it - OY- The Pressure! But I don't back down from a challenge. I met the task head on; and by the second meet I had recruited Luis to help me, (because we really needed another pair of eyes.)
Now we were all set; Dave (or as Luis liked to call him; "Loud Guy,") me, and Luis were the efficient officiants for the kid's swim team.

Everything was going well for the efficient officiants until one HOT Thursday when DURING the meet , this young, thin, overly blond, woman approached our table; (I knew who this woman was because her son had just been in Kelsie's pre-school class.) and said "My daughter came in first and they gave her a second place ribbon." Through our conversation with her (which by the way was taking place while we were supposed to be watching another race;) we determined that her daughter had swam in a relay. So the 3 of us explained that although her daughter may have finished first; her lane must have finished second. She of course disputed this; which really was pointless because if she would have told Shannon; I know that Shannon would have just given her a first place ribbon; but NO - she just went on and on ; say it with me "While we were supposed to be watching another race." She finally gave up and went away; but she had the 3 of us so shaken up; that we were second guessing ourselves for the rest of the afternoon - so much so that "Loud Guy" even had to announce at one point that we had made a mistake on one call and re-announce the results for that race - which I'm sure just convinced her EVEN MORE that we had made a mistake in her 6 year old daughter's race.

When I saw Shannon I told her what had happened and how horrible this woman was; and she knew EXACTLY who I was talking about before I even pointed her out; and she told me what a nightmare this woman and her kids were. As it turns out, by the end of the meet she had yelled at me, Luis, Loud Guy and 2 of the coaches. Shannon urged me not to give this woman a second thought and informed me that Luis and I were now committed to these positions for as long as our kids are on the swim team. Guess how happy Luis is. - LOL

So swim team ends and back to school we go. Thankfully her son is not in Kelsie's class this year, and when we see each other, neither of us says a thing; although her son says hello to Kelsie, each and EVERY time we see them.

At the end of last soccer season I was recruited to join the board; so I did. Why? Because I have a problem - but we've already established this. I then in turn, recruited Michelle (...)k and we are now respectively the U-14 and U-6 division reps for our kid's soccer.

One evening we were working at registration and who do you think walked through the door? If you're guessing "nightmare woman; " you're right. She saw me sitting at the registration table and she kinda took a step back. You just know that she had to be thinking "What's with this god damned woman? Every where I go; there she is. I'm at swim team - she's officiating the race (not that I think she knows that word;) I go to register for soccer, she's taking the registration - what a freakin nightmare." Anyway, as fate would have it, I was the next board member available, so lucky me - she was ALL MINE. I was VERY polite and tried to help her; because she had a series of problems. First - no birth certificate for one of the kids (and of course - we REQUIRE one.) I spoke to the registrar (because I was sitting right next to her and I told "Nightmare woman" that she could get a copy and just give it to me at school. (How nice was that?) But wait - there's more. Her next problem (which she didn't even know she had;) was that her son (the one who goes to school with Kelsie) was too young to play. Of course I had to be the one to inform her of this. So I asked the registrar if he could play, and she said "Only if there is a coach who's willing to take him." So I said to "NW" "We can let you register him and if we can't find a coach who will take him; we'll refund your money for him - Is that OK?" She said "yes;" but went on to ask if Kelsie played. I said "yes" but explained that her birthday is before the cutoff. I must have re-iterated the terms and conditions of this registration a good 3 times; just to make sure that there were no misunderstandings. I was NICE. I mean Boy, was I NICE. And then as soon as she left, Jill (the registrar) said "No way in hell am I looking for a coach for her younger son because that woman and her kids are nightmares. I sense a theme here. This woman really has SOME reputation.

One morning, a few weeks ago, I was signing Kelsie in at pre-school and her teacher started venting to me about people who don't follow the rules. Well, you know she didn't mean me; because I am the Queen of FOLLOWING THE RULES. I think she just told me because she is familiar with me since she had been Lyndzi's teacher too. Either that or it's just because people just tend to tell me stuff. I don't know which; but nonetheless I didn't give it a any thought.

When I went to pick Kelsie up, her teacher started talking to me and then excused herself as she looked past me and said (in a harsh voice) "So and So, did you get my message?" I turned around as So and So started talking (I think that's human nature; or maybe I'm just a nosy bitch;) and I don't know why I was surprised, but So and So was none other than NIGHTMARE WOMAN. (I was giddy.) When the teacher started talking to me again I said "Is that who you were talking about this morning?" and she vehemently nodded YES. It was at this point that I knew; she is the most hated woman in Peoria; and I am her Newman. Remember Newman on Seinfeld? He was Jerry's nemesis and every time Jerry said "Hello Newman," he said it with such disdain. Well; I'm So and so's Newman - Everywhere she shows up; there I am - and no matter what she's doing; I'm doing more. First swim team, then soccer, now she has a problem with the staff at the school and I'm the witness. I'm probably the last person that she wants to see ANYWHERE. So, I bet it came as no surprise when she got to the fall performance at the pre-school and saw Kelsie's name in the program. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree ya know. We're just a family of Do-ers.

Perhaps next time I run into her (And you KNOW there will be a next time;) I'll just say (in my best Seinfeldesque tone) "Hello So and So;" to which I'm sure she'll respond "Hello Newman." Or more than likely - she'll say nothing at all; but her son will say "Hi" to Kelsie.
Till next time...

A Blessing In Disguise...

OK, it's official; I am a soccer mom!!
Beyond the fact that my family goes to soccer practice for an hour and a 1/2 on Tues, an hour on Wed and an hour and a 1/2 on Thursday; games on Saturday that last an hour plus a 1/2 hour of practice prior too; besides for the time that I'm putting in with that - I'm a soccer mom because I LOVE IT!!

I'll admit it; I'm TOTALLY addicted. During soccer season I live for Saturdays; and if there's a double header I am in my glory. I actually considered postponing my vacation for a day so that my kids could play their soccer games, but Luis put the kaboosh on that big time. Yeah, I'm totally one of those loud, embarrassing moms that tries to encourage their kid as well as the team. I cheer for all the kids and the team as a whole. Go Ethen, Yeah Andrew, Go SHOCKERS! Go Dragons!

This is Nicky's second year playing soccer and he was lucky enough to get on a wonderful team; with a fabulous coach (of course he got on that team AFTER there was an incident over his placement; because hey you know me - I'm the Queen of INCIDENTS, and nothing ever runs as smoothly as it should. Yes, the registrar in her infinite wisdom put my 3 kids on teams that practiced at the same time in 2 different places. Well, ya know I wasn't having that; and after I let them know that this just wouldn't be possible; they moved Nicky onto the Shockers and now all is right with the world. Other than WT (see previous blog "Here We Go Again - Oct. 11, 2007) I love everyone on the team and all of their parents. Oh yeah, and by the way, after my little conversation with WT, coincidentally she and her child didn't come to practice for 6 weeks and they've only come 2 1/2 times beyond that. HMMMM - was it something I said; like "I'm Jewish" - I wonder. Ironically enough Coach Russell is Jewish too and get this; he comes from the same county in NY that I come from; but he moved here when he was 5. I love Coach Russell, he's like another brother for me; in fact he could be Mine and Schmooley's long lost brother.

OK so let's round the bend here. So the Shockers are having a fabulous season and it has been really exciting to watch. Even Michelle (Not yet legally) K came to oneof the Shockers games last weekend after her son' soccer game. Nicky scored his first goal about a month ago and he was over the moon. Lyndzi on the other hand averages about 4 goals a game, but then again their field is about the size of a twister board - haha just kidding - but it is small. Lyndzi can pretty much score a goal with one kick from the center of the field, and I heard her coach (coach Bob) say, "we're going to have to make this field bigger just for Lyndzi. Coach Bob is a sweetie. Lyndzi played on his team last year and he came back to coach again, even though he hasn't had a kid in the league for 2 years. Get your minds outta the gutter - he's a nice guy and he's still on the board which is why he'd coach a little kids team when they aren't his kids; but the point is - because he knew Lyndzi he had kicked the ball around with Kelsie last year and he agreed to let her play this year even though she wasn't old enough. Kelsie looks really cute in her uniform and she's good at chasing the ball, she's just not so interested in kicking it. Anyway, Dragons or Shockers, I am always LOUD and PROUD!!

So I've been sick for almost 6 weeks now. I've come to find out it's a sinus infection which is no big surprise because I pretty much always have a sinus infection. Really I think about now I am Queen of SINUS INFECTIONS - not something that one should aspire to be, but I feel well qualified for the position now, so I'll accept the title. Anyway, this sinus infection has given me a lovely cough that will not go away, no matter what I've tried and believe me I've tried just about everything. I had laryngitis on Christmas eve day due to all the coughing, and cured that with a little homeopathic remedy of my mother in laws. I was actually willing to wait to try it because I know me having laryngitis is Luis' favorite Christmas present (it happened 2 years ago and I've never seen the man happier.) But his mom was anxious ot help so by Christmas night my voice was back - fast forward a few weeks and this past Friday night I start losing my voice. Perhaps having to shout in a restaurant/dance place contributed to my illness but come Sat morning, yup - no voice.

As we rode to soccer I whispered to Luis; in my best pouty whisper, "This just isn't fair. How am I gonna cheer for our team if I don't have a voice?" I was very dejected. I even told my friend Monica that she would have to cheer for Nicky or tell him to move his butt or whatever I felt the need to say to him. Now you have to keep in mind that Monica is from Venezuela and though she speaks perfect English, she has a pretty thick accent; so it went something like this "Ahh, Come on Nick; MOVE!! Your Mama said so!" - trailed off by "don't hate Monica." Now as luck would have it, we were losing, we were losing bad, and Nicky was putting in NO EFFORT what so ever which pissed me off because I had to get up at 615 to get them all to the field by 730 because both the Shockers & the Dragons had 8 o'clock games this week. So if I had to get up, being sick, get them all ready and freeze my butt off; hell ya - he'd better be moving his.
So maybe my laryngitis was a blessing in disguise. It spared my child from his mom behaving badly, and spared me from another journal entry in his Mommie Dearest Diary, and it's just one less thing for him to have to discuss in his therapy (No, not now, - years from now when he's convinced that I've ruined his life - yup, I'm aiming high.) Every time I do something questionable where my children are concerned I just think to myself - yup, that's another therapy session right there.
